For decades, getting around Kalyan and Ambernath has meant one thing: the local train. That is starting to change. Three metro lines are planned or under way that will connect these neighbourhoods to Thane, Bhiwandi, Navi Mumbai and Mumbai’s eastern suburbs — and they’re worth understanding if you’re choosing where to buy a home.

The three lines to know
Metro Line 5A — Kalyan to Ulhasnagar
An extension of Metro Line 5 (Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan), Line 5A is planned as an elevated corridor of about 12 km through Durgadi, Khadakpada and Bhoirwadi, splitting towards Kalyan and Ulhasnagar.
Where it stands: the Maharashtra government approved the integrated Line 5 and 5A project in April 2026, and MMRDA has begun appointing consultants. Meanwhile, the first phase of Line 5 between Thane and Bhiwandi is in advanced construction.
Why it matters for Kalyan West: a station at Khadakpada would put the metro within minutes of the Godrej Hill neighbourhood.
Metro Line 12 — Kalyan to Taloja
Line 12 runs about 22 km from Kalyan through Dombivli to Taloja, with an interchange with Metro 5 at Kalyan APMC and with Navi Mumbai Metro at Taloja.
Where it stands: under construction, with completion targeted for December 2027.
Why it matters: a direct link between Kalyan and Navi Mumbai — including the new airport region — without changing trains in Thane.
Metro Line 14 — Kanjurmarg to Badlapur, via Ambernath
Line 14 is a planned corridor of about 44 km connecting Kanjurmarg in Mumbai with Badlapur, through Vikhroli, Mahape, Ghansoli and Ambernath.
Where it stands: at the planning stage — MMRDA is preparing a revised project report before construction can begin.
Why it matters for Ambernath: a metro station would give Ambernath a direct link to Navi Mumbai’s business hubs and Mumbai’s eastern suburbs, beyond the existing railway line.
Why buyers look early at areas with upcoming connectivity
Across Mumbai’s suburbs, neighbourhoods tend to change once a metro line arrives. Commutes become shorter and more predictable, new shops, schools and offices follow, and more families start looking at the area. That’s why many buyers choose to look at a neighbourhood while the infrastructure is being built, rather than after it opens.
A few sensible rules if you’re thinking this way:
- Buy for living first. Choose a home that works for your family today, with the metro as a bonus, not the only reason.
- Prefer ready homes. A ready-to-move flat with an Occupation Certificate lets you move in or rent it out now, instead of waiting on two construction timelines at once.
- Check the basics. Buy only in MahaRERA-registered projects, and check the developer’s record of delivery and conveyance.
- Expect timelines to move. Large metro projects often take longer than first announced — plan around today’s connectivity, and treat the metro as upside.
TCJ homes near the upcoming metro corridors
- Arya & Ira, Godrej Hill, Kalyan West — ready-to-move 1 BHK homes, a few minutes from Khadakpada, along the planned Metro 5A route.
- Vivanta, Javsai, Ambernath West — ready-to-move 1 & 2 BHK homes in a 7.5-acre gated community, in the town planned to be served by Metro 14.
Both have their Occupation Certificate, so you can see the finished home today — and be settled in long before the trains start running.
Metro routes, stations and timelines are based on publicly reported MMRDA and Government of Maharashtra information as of October 2026 and may change. This article is general information, not investment advice.
